Blog#14:Pollyanna

Hi, i'm Yuri. Sorry, I'm late!:(
Do you know Pollyanna? It is a title that the book I read.

Miss Polly Harrington was a cold, very rich woman. She is forty years old, and her father, mother and sisters were all dead. She lives alone in a big house because she liked living quietly. One day in June, Miss Polly got sad news: her sister’s husband was dead. So she had to take care of her niece, Pollyanna.
POLLYANNA

Pollyanna was a little bit strange girl for Miss Polly. She was always glad when Miss Polly punished her. She said she was playing the “glad game”. Pollyanna met some people. Mrs. Snow, a lady who was very sick and never left bet. Mr. Pendleton, a man who never smiled and always looked angry when Pollyanna talked to him. Jimmy, an orphan boy who wanted to live in a real home with family. They all have some kind of problem, but she cleared them after she visited and talked to them some times. She changed people who were around her. She was good at finding the good aspects of the people. Mrs. Snow became feminine,Miss Polly became softer and Mr. Pendleton became friendly.

I think she was a little bit mysterious girl. Because she had a talent to make everyone who she met happy and lively. She connected Mr. Pendleton and Jimmy, who both felt lonely, live together. She made Miss Polly and Dr. Chilton, who used to be lovers, a couple again. So I was shocked that accident happened to her. She injured badly, and she couldn’t walk for about 10 months.

However she never gave up. She tried to walk by herself and she was glad about every small step she got. She didn’t change at all even though she got serious accident and almost dying. She always encouraged people and I was one of them. She taught us how important not to give up and being always “glad” about everything.

Pollyanna was made into a movie, but I haven't seen it, so I want to see this movie sometime.

#14 A great artist

Hello, I am Juri. Today I introduce a great artist, Pablo Picasso. Do you know him? I learned his history when I was a high school student. Mabey you imagine him a strange, unique  or unskillful artist. But I don't think so. His all of pictures are really wonderful !! Please take a look at this picture.

This picture's title is "First Communion". it was painted by Picasso when he was fifteen years old. I was very surprised at his paintong skill ! Don’t you think so?
Picasso was born in malaga, spain. His first word since he was born was ’piz’. It means pencil in English. Very unique story :) His one of the most famous pictures is 'Guernica'. Have you ever seen this?

Guernica is very large picture, 3.5 by 7.8 meters. it was painted after spanish war. spanish goverment asked picasso to paint the cruelty of the war. He spent only one month painting it. Picasso’s works are categorized into periods; Blue period, Rose period, Cubism, Classicism and Surrealism. I like blue period. One of his friends died. That led this Blue period. So,during this period, he painted pictures with cold color such as blue, black and gray. Sadness was represented with these colors.
if you are interested in him and his picture, please check this website !!

Blog#14:Figure Skating

Hi! I'm Mari.
Today, it is too cold so I want a Kotatsu. (>_<)

I would like to talk about figure skating. In winter, there are some games of figure skating, such as the series of Grand Prix, Japan Championships, and World Championships. Have you watched  figure skating on TV? I like to watch the games. In Japan there are some famous skaters, such as Mao Asada, Miki Ando, Akiko Suzuki, Daisuke Takahashi, Nobunari Oda, Takahiko Kozuka, Yuzuru Hanyu. They are great skaters. In particular, I like Miki Ando. But in this season she doesn't enter any games because of taking a rest. So I am very sad.

Also I introduce my favorite skater.

He is Johnny Weir in United States. Do you know him? If you have watched him once, you could not forget him, I think. As you can watch, he is a unique skater. Some people criticize him because he is not a typical man. But I think he is a wonderful skater. Now he has taken a rest so I hope that he will come back to the official games in the future.

The Grand Prix Final  and  Japan Championships will take place in this month. And World Championships will take place in March next year. So please watch some games. I think the games will make you excited.

Hi! I'm Saho. It got cold recently, so there is a lot of flu about. We have to be careful.

By the way, today, I would like to talk about my pleasure in winter. Every year, I am looking forward to watching illumination. When winter comes, the cities are brightly illuminated. My house is also lighted.

Last year, I went to Yebisu garden place and LaQua to watch illumination. I like the former in particular.

It is very beautiful, isn't it?

I want to go various places to watch illumination. Where do you recommend? Please tell me:-)

Blog#13:My favorite music

Hi. I'm Mari.

I'm sorry to be late for posting the blog because of headache.
It is very cold today. But I like winter better than summer. Which do you like better winter or summer? Why?

I'll introduce my favorite rock band " Oasis". Do you know them? I think you have heard some songs somewhere because some songs were used as Japanese commercial song. In particlar, "Whatever" is the most famous in Japan. Have you heard it? I like the song.

Main members of Oasis are Noel Gallagher and Liam Gallagher. They are brothers. A guitalist is older brother, Noel. A vocalist is younger brother, Liam. Each eyebrow is bold so you can find them soon when you watch the video. Although they often fight over something, they had lasted the band for 18 years. But in 2009, Oasis broke up because of a quarrel between the brothers. Now, many fans hope that they will be reconciled. Of course I hope so. Also recently, Liam Gallagher said about possibility of reunion in 2015. It is 20th anniversary year of their second album which has sold almost 20million copies all around the world. So I look forward to reunion in 2015.

I like rock music very much. Do you like rock music? Please tell me your favorite music.

Blog#12 The Shortest Escalator

  Hi, i'm Juri.
Did you take part in the intercollegiate games? I did not. So I had four straight holidays last week because of no class on Thurthday!! I enjoyed :)
By the way. I have had a look at your blogs (#9) and envy your useful gadgets!! I want a smartphone earnestly!! I think Japan has a lot of high technologies, so we are surrounded by many useful things! Such things have brought about great benefits for our life :-)  However, such a useful thing is not always good. I think that it sometimes makes the Japanese lazy. For instance, cellphone is very useful, but thanks to it, our ability to write in Kanji became lower than before, I think. Don’t you think so?  I can't remember Kanji which I want to write once in a while.
Besides, I found an interesting topic on the internet some days ago. Please take a look at this picture.

Have you ever seen such a very short escalator? It is said to be "the shortest escalator in the world". The number of steps is only five!! You can find such a short escalator in underground shopping center in Kawasaki station. In addition, it is also found in Tokyo area. There are stairs next to the escalator. It seems more efficient to take them, so I think the escalator is not necessary and a waste of electricity :-(  What do you think about it??

                                                                       "Fireflies"

I can't sing his songs well because English the words is too difficult to me.......:(
But for the next time, I want to sing his song perfectlly.

#10 My Part-time Job

 Hi, I'm Saho.
Today, I'd like to tell you about my part-time job. I work at a book store in Ikebukuro.
Do you know "Asahiya shoten"? It belongs to a department store, so the way of service is different from other jobs a little.
A lot of college students work there, so I can enjoy working with them.
Mainly, I work as a cashier during the business hours. After that, I arrange books in order for about an hour and then, I can know various books.

I found a very cute book! It is Kiki & Lala's diary. I love the character, so I want it!
Everyone who works there is very very kind, so I'm happy:-) I intend to continue my work.

If you have a chance, please come to our store!

#9 My Favorite Gadget

Hi, I'm Juri Hayashi.

Sorry for the  late blog but my computer keeps going funny:-(  I bought it about 5 years ago and it has a lot of data such as music and some moving images. So my compter takes a long time to move. I want to buy a new compter with a great capacity!! Do you have IPad? It sounds useful too.
Today I want to introduce my favorite gadget, iPod. Do you have it? It is a nice gadget to listen to music, you know. I always leave it when I go to school. In my green IPod, there are more than one thousand songs, that is, IPod makes possible to bring a lot of CDs at once. IPod also has various functions such as  playing a moving image and some game. I can spend a time plesasantly with it.

My favorite Japanese artiste
"STRAIGHTENER"

By the way, I sometimes see dangerous people who ride a bicycle while listening to music. They can not recognize any sound such as approaching car and take their mind off their drive. In fact, the police in Kanagawa Prefecture fined less than 50,000 yen for such a dangerous drive. Have you ever seen the people like them? We have to need a thorough review!!

See you :)

Blog#9 My Favorite Book

Hi. I'm Mari.

Today, I will introduce my favorite book.

I like to read books. And I often read books in train. It takes about one and a half hours to go to the university from my house so I can read about two books in a week. So I recommend you to read books in train.

Yesterday, I read a book named " Shitamachi Rocket". Do you know it? It was awarded Naoki prize in 2011. Naoki prize is one of the most famous prize for novels in Japan.

I work at a book store as my part time job. So I saw many people who bought the book. Many of them are officeworker. I wanted to read it very much. Then yesterday I found the book in the library in the university.
It's very lucky for me. I read it in a day because it was very interesting! It is a story about dream for a man.
I recommend it!Please read it.

Blog#9: My gadget

Hi, I'm Yuri. Today, I'm going to tell you about one of my gadgets, my smartphone. I bought my iPhone about four months ago. At that time, I was very happy and I used it everyday everytime. One day, I walked to my station to go to tennis. I left five minutes late, so I ran for the train. But, when I arrived at the station, I discovered that I had lost my iPhone!!!

I searched all over the bag and my pocket for the missing iPhone. But, I couldn't find my iPhone anywhere. Immediately, I reported the damage to the police, and asked softbankshop so as not to be use somebody. I gave up searching and I was very sad. :( But! At that same day, my sister came across my iPhone at a cram school near the station! I was very happy to hear the news. I thanked her, and now, I use my iPhone carefully.

Blog#8: My remarkable person

Hi, I'm Yuri. How are you doing? It's really gotten cold! Today, I'm going to tell you about my remarkable person.

My remarkable person is Kimiko Date, who is a very famous Japanese professional tennis player. She is 40 years old now. She started playing tennis when she was 7 years old. She was the first Asian woman who has ever been ranked in the top-ten women players in the world.

In 1996,  she announced her retirement. Yet, she came back on court nearly 12 years later, announcing an unexpected comeback in April 2008. She was 37 years old at that time. After the comeback, she has won several world titles. She became the second-oldest player who won a singles title on the Women’s Tennis Association Tour. I think one of her charm points is her smile. I like her face dimples. :) She is 40 years old now, but she is still an active professional tennis player and even she is setting a new record. People tend to give up things because of their age, but she is not the one like that. Her challenging spirit is totally amazing.

Blog#9 Gadget

 Hello. I'm Saho.
Recently, it has been pleasantly cool. I like Autumn:-)

By the way, I'd like to talk about my gadget. In this summer, I changed my cellphone to a smart phone. Wherever I go, I take it.

This is mine. I use docomo's smart phone, MEDIAS. It is waterproofing phone, so I can use it in a bath, at the beach, and at a kitchen.

My favorite application is "Viber". We can call free of charge! I prefer calling to emailing, so it is good for me. Also, I often use the Internet. When I was a mobile phone user, I cannot see PC site, but now, I can see such site everywhere.

Smart phone is very convinient. I cannot live without it!

Blog#8 My Part-time Job

Hi! I'm Juri.

How've you been? I'm doing okay :) Last Sunday, I went to Enoshima with my friends by car. To our surprise, there was a lot of people in the beach in spite of September. A young of sardines on top of a bowl of rice (namashirasudon) I ate for dinner tasted very good!!

Please eat it in Enoshima!!

By the way, do you work part-time?? I work part time as a waitress at a family restaurant called "GUST".  As you know, it is one of the famous restaurants in Japan.  The workshop is near my house. It takes only 10 minutes from my house by bicycle, so it's very useful to go to and from. I have worked at there since I was 18 years old. Now I can wait on custmers well.

However, GUST caused an accident of food poising in the Tohoku district  last month:( After that, also in my workshop, the number of custmers decreased. The cause of  food poising is factory in Tohoku, so other districts are not related!! My working hours were reduced because of a lot of interval. So my salaries will be slashes ;(  This picture was taken in a waiting room at GUST.
There' s nothing to do!!
So I am at a loss whether to resign or not!!!!!!

Do (or did) you work part time? Please tell me :)

Blog #8: Summer Vacation

Hi. I'm Mari Miyano.
How are you? I'm fine but too hot! And I have not finished my homework yet so I must do. (>_<)

Yesterday, I ate Monjayaki with my friends. And I ate it first time in my life. I told them that so they was surprised. Have you eaten Monjayaki? Do you like it? How often do you eat it?
A friend was very good at making it. But I was not. And I was surprised that there are many kinds of tastes of Monjayaki. We ate many kinds of that, such as Mentai-Cheese, Butter-Potato, Strawberry, Pokki and so on. We ate many kinds so I can't remember all tastes.

My friends whom I ate Monja with were my classmates in high school. We had not met in some months so I was glad to meet them. I thought that I am a high school student now when I met them. So I enjoyed very much.

See you next week! Before that I have to do my homework…!!

According to  a Web site, Stanley Park is recognized around the globe as one of the great parks of the world!
This park is too big to walk, so if you go to this park, you would be better to go this park by bycicle.:) There were a lot of plants and trees. Also so many beautiful flowers were in bloom. We had a good time at Stanley Park. Have a nice summer vacation! :)

Blog#7 A trip I took

Hi, everyone! I am Juri Hayashi.

It's cool today:-) How is your summer vacation? What's new? I am just goofing off at home:-|

By the way, have you gone anywhere recently? My grandparents, parents and I went to Gifu early in August. Have you ever been Gifu?? There are a lot of greens and clear air and water. My hometown Hadano is also a country town, but it is not as rural as Gifu. I want to live in Gifu in the future:-)
Today, I introduce the good place in Gifu!! First, my favorite place is a lily garden. There are more than ten tousand lilies. The color is not only white, but also pink, yellow, orange and red:-) It's a very beautiful place!!Some people take a walk with their dogs.

Look at this picture.
We can be appreciative of a beautiful landscape
while going up by lift.

Next, Hida-Takayama is nice city!! It is a tasteful city like Kyoto. There are some restricted areas by car or motor bike. People live there without too much technology.
Many foreign people see the sights of Hida-Takayama.

Also, Gifu has many good places or food because of clear water and air!! I hope you visit to Gifu someday:-)

Thank you!!

Blog#7 Near my hometown

 Hi, I'm Saho Harimoto.
Today, I'd like to introduce near my hometown, Kawagoe.

There are three features: place, food, and school.

First, there are a lot of sightseeing spots in Kawagoe, such as Tokinokane and Kashiyayokocho. Tokinokane was built about 400 years ago. It tells time to people fourth a day now. Kashiyayokocho is an also famous place. Sweets have been manufacutured there since beginning of the Meiji era. Now, there are about 20 cheep sweets stores.

Second, Kawagoe has an interesting food.

Kawagoe's fugashi is the longest fugashi in Japan. It is 95cm long. You can buy this fugashi at Kashiyayokocho. Sweet potato is also famous food. There are a lot of sweet potato food, such as rice cracker, ice cream, beer, and taiyaki.

Finally, Saitama has many boys' scools and girls' schools. Of course, Kawagoe also has these schools, such as Kawagoe girls' high school and Kawagoe high school. Kawagoe girls' high school is my high school.

In front of the school, there is a beautiful row of cherry blossom tree. Everyone looks forward to seeing the cherry blossom every year.

Kawagoe high school is a boys' school. This school is famous for "Water boys". In school festival, you can see the synchronized swimming by the swimming club.

A producer of a movie company watched the special section of the synchronized swimming on TV, and he made it into a movie as "Water boys". After that, the visitors to the school festival increased dramatically, in 2002, about 30000 people came there.

That is only a brief introduction to Kawagoe. I hope you can visit there someday:-)

Moreover, you can see the sea in the restaurant because there is a fine view from the wide window. So if  you went to Kamakura, you should visit there! And I think that you have heard "Enoden" that means Enoshima electric railway.

Please watch the video 3:10~. In the train you can see the beautiful view.  Then Enoden's body is deep green and very cute. When it is sunny, you can open the window and feel winds and be relax very well.

Also there are many sightseeing spots such as Daibutsu, Tsuruoka Hachimangu and Ajisaidera. So I have not lose interest in Kamakura. Kamakura will make you enjoy!! And it takes about an hour to go to Kamakura station from Mejiro station. So please go :-) !

Blog #4 Summer time system

Hi,  I'm Juri.

What a hot night today!!!! It disturbs my sleep:( I don't like summer because I am sensitive to heat!

By the way, have you ever thought about summer time system?? Of course, you  have heard it at least one.Summer time system is the part of year when we advance our clocks by one hour. More than 70 countries introduce it. Also in Japan, some coporations introduce it. This change helps to keep the hours of daylight coodinated with the time that people are active. The first time I heard the idea, I thought it was a very nice idea because it helped us save electricity! To my surprise, however, about 70% people disagree in Japan. Why?The reason is a lot....
>We can't expect summer time system to save electricity because a peak of energy's consumption is same as summer time.
>Overtime work just keeps on increasing.
>Japanese sunsets are earlier than fotreign countries',
so it doesn't go with Japanese lifestyle.
>It is hard for some people in delicate health to change their lifestyle.

What do you think?

How about your country, Ms.MacGregor? Please tell me:)

Blog#3: My favorite book

Hi, I'm Yuri. I read "Tenku No Hachi" last week. This book was written by Keigo Higashino and it was written about thirteen years ago. But, the content of the book is mainly about nuclear power generation and an atomic reactor, so it contains a lot of information about that which we have to know. A lot of technical terms is used in this book, but there are a lot of thrilling scenes in this book, so I think you can read it at one go! In addition, Keigo Higashino wrote any other books and I want you to read those books, "Dying Eye" and "Genya". These are very interesting! Please read these books by all means:)

Blog#1: My favorite restaurant

Hi, my name is Yuri.

I'm going to introduce my favorite restaurant to you. My favorite restaurant is "salvatore" . "Salvatore" is an Italian restaurant in Tamaplaza. There are various kinds of food, for example, salad, pizza, pasta, ...and so on. And, at that restaurant you can eat as much as you like all you want for 1500 yen! I like margherita pizza in particular.

It's simple pizza, but so delicious:)

Please go there by all means!

I sometimes go to Harajuku to go shopping, have lunch, and so on. The other day, I went to Eggs'n Things. It is a Hawaiian restaurant and it is famous for the pancake.

It is very big, so I recommend you to eat it with your friends.
If you have a chance to go there, please enjoy eating.

Good shops and restaurants in Mejiro

I don't usually shop or eat in Mejiro, so I don't really know any good places. But the other day, I had a chance to eat at an Italian restaurant called Osteria Hada. I really enjoyed it. The ingredients were fresh and the flavours were mild and tasty. It is a small shop and the atmosphere is like being in someone's home. I went for dinner, but next time, I think I'll go for lunch, probably some Friday. If you would like to join me, please let me know!

This is not a very good photo, but it shows one of their pasta dishes.
It was al dente and good!

Please introduce a good shop, restaurant, or place in Mejiro!
